In an episode from Season 9 of The Big Bang Theory an Asian “joke” about Asian women was made that needs to be unpackaged. This joke can join the long list of jokes that I’ve already compiled this year. Kripke, a co-worker of the gang, was calling out to women online through Sheldon’s online live show, Fun with Flags. He said, “[looking for] Asians 18-24 no fatties.”
This not only adds to the fetishization of Asian women, but also promotes fat-phobia. It says that yes, Asian women come in all body sizes, but to be a fat Asian woman, is an anomaly and they should be ostracized. This already happens within the Asian community, but now is perpetuated in the U.S. by white males like Kripke. In addition, the woman he’s seeking is incredibly young compared to him. He wants to basically have a subservient young girl to take care of his sexual fantasies. He holds Asian women up to their ridiculous female and racial stereotypes, but he can be old and overweight, exemplifying his white male privilege. BBT has an Asian character, Raj, and he’s constantly used as a punching bag, but at least he can have sex and sexual prowess because he’s a man. He’s just effeminate because he’s an ASIAN man. But there’s no representation of Asian women, so there’s not diversity to show, Asian women aren’t just skinny or domicile people, they come in wide varieties of shapes and sizes. Though his demeaning comment implies that, bigger women are “not worthy.” BBT’s jokes come out of cruel racial stereotypes and misogynistic comments that need to be stopped.
