Okay, so I’m more than halfway done with Lost and they still didn’t explain anything. I really don’t even know what the point of watching it is other than to get it over with. It has been a slow and painful death waiting for the show to end, mainly because they keep adding things out of nowhere. It’s as though the writers of the show didn’t know how they were gonna end it, so they keep changing what’s/who’s important.
For example: for the first four seasons we thought the Dharma Initiative was important, turns out it wasn’t. Or we thought that Ben was important, but now it turns out he knows nothing and is just another pawn in Jacob and the other guy’s game. Or pregnant women!? Why do pregnant women die on the island? What experiments were Ben and his gang doing on them? Why were they stealing children?! Who were stealing the children? The people from the temple or Ben and his goonies?! Richard at one point in Season 4 or 5 wanted to be the leader, kick Ben out, and focus on more important things than curing pregnant women, what were those things? We’ll never fucking know because Richard turns out not to be an important character at all.
Also, how are there Egyptian things on the island when they’re nowhere near Egypt?! And Jacob and his brother and mother know English and Latin, but not Egyptian so how can they engrave those hieroglyphics?! I know they want to make it really deep by adding in all these myths, but now it’s just lame. Like we dropped the hell plot line in season 3, yet in season fucking FIVE, they decide to pick it up again. As if we didn’t notice that they left it hanging for almost 40 episodes. Like give me a break. Also the black smoke, Ben controlled it and summoned it one point, yet now he has no control over it?! And how does Jacob leave the island? We don’t know. We don’t know anything and that’s probably the most frustrating thing about the show. They expect you to stay invested in it even though they literally give you nothing to go on, but more and more mysteries that they refuse to resolve.
Season 5 takes place during the three years that the Oceanic 6 left the island. We see Sawyer and his gang make nice with the Dharma Initiative in good ol’ 1977. We kind of see things connecting with the past and the present like the hatch, Miles’ backstory, baby Ben etc. But none of it is a big payoff. We see also see what it means to be “infected,” which is not having a sense of time. But then later that’s shattered because being infected is actually being hypnotized by the black smoke aka John Locke aka Jacob’s evil twin brother. Like at that point, who gives a shit what the infection is? And in the beginning it only infected children and pregnant women, but now it can affect anyone?! Back on the mainland we see Ben gathering the Oceanic 6 to go back to the island and they do. Everyone makes it back and they have to meet up with Sawyer and the gang (at least the ones that land in 1977). Those are Jack, Kate, Sayid, and Hurley. The ones that don’t land in 1977, but rather present day, are Sun, John Locke, who’s later possessed, and Jacob’s henchmen (who die off one by one). They finally are able to reunite in the same time period when Juliet sacrifices herself. Her dying really had no point, but to further Sawyer’s emotional character arc and to make Jack more of an anti-hero.
So at the end of season 5, everyone is trying to reunite and find each other between the two islands. The evil force in season 5 is the black smoke, and Dharma who releases the electromagnetic whatever. Let’s see if season 6, the last season, amounts to anything good.
