Season 4 was thankfully 10 episodes less than the last 3 seasons, but that doesn’t mean it contained any less BS. We finally found out what happened to Michael, Jin “dies,” there’s time travel on the island, Desmond is for some reason “special,” and they introduced us to three more annoying AF characters - Dan, Charlotte, and Miles - who were from the supposed “rescue team” when in reality they were actually commissioned to kill everyone on the island.
So how did it get to this? Well first, this season is all about them getting off the island. And we know that they get off the island because instead of flashbacks, we get flash forwards, to what happens after they leave the island. We realize that only 6 of them were able to go back to the mainland - Kate, Jack, Aaron, Sun, Sayid and Hurley. After they came to shore, they had to lie about all of their experiences on the island because that was the only way to protect the ones who didn’t make it back. Mainly because Charles Widmore, Desmond’s fiancee’s evil father, wanted to kill everyone on the island - mainly Desmond because he’s unfit to marry his daughter or whatever. That’s where Dan, Charlotte, Miles, and the freighter come in. Jack initially thinks that they’re a rescue mission, but we learn otherwise. John Locke decides to stay on the island while the others want to leave, but before they can leave with Jack, Ben moves the island in time and the rest of the Oceanic passengers are nowhere to be found. We learn through the flash forwards that the island wants the Oceanic six + John Locke, who was able to get off the island later and died on the mainland, need to return to the island because “they were never supposed to leave.” So the challenge for next season is, how will they get back to the island.
Michael, we find out later, did make it to the mainland with Walt. He told Walt that he killed two innocent people in order to save Walt, and Walt hates him for that, so they’re estranged and Michael wants to kill himself but the island won’t let him. Yeah, it’s getting that ridiculous. So, Michael is recruited by Ben to be a spy on Widmore’s freighter and only after he completes his duty there can he “die.” So he completes his mission there and dies, but not without “Jacob” revealing himself to Michael. “Jacob” is still this mysterious force on the island that can shape shift into random dead people - at least that’s what I’m assuming. He’s taken the shape of Claire, Jack’s dad, a black horse and other forms. Jin dies on the freighter as well and Sun goes ballistic to a point where it’s unbelievable she’d be that sad. Next, there’s Desmond who can time travel (at least his consciousness can). His point in the show is to basically communicate with Dan (who’s now a good guy) in order to help him, Sawyer, Charlotte, Bernard, Rose, Juliet etc. get off the island.
That’s basically how Season 4 wraps up. They’re really testing your suspension of disbelief with this whole time travel bullshit. Not to mention Widmore and Ben’s conflict. I really don’t get what’s so special about the fucking island or Ben’s motivation. He wants to save the island for what? And Widmore, he wants to destroy the island because of Desmond and control it for his own evil schemes? Like who gives a shit?! We still don’t know what the black smoke is or who Jacob really is and if he’s even important. The payoff is just not matching the hype and I’m actually disappointed. It would have been so much better as a religious metaphor. But let’s keep watching to find out.
